Living K’é
Relationship and Responsibility

By Lilly Henderson

As a child, my grandparents taught me my four basic clans so I would know where my roots are, who my respected relatives are, and how to receive love, support, and guidance from them.

K’é is a very important teaching to the Diné. To walk with K’é is to give love and have compassion toward others. Love can grow into trust and lead us toward forgiveness.

I also think about the Beatitudes in the Gospel of Matthew 5:1–10.

Jesus taught his disciples on the mountainside about what they needed to do to enrich their lives. I chose this passage because it relates to my traditional way of life and the teachings of K’é and the Hózhóji relationship.

Jesus began to teach them, saying, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”

K’é restores positive action. It teaches us to listen and understand, and to communicate about the possibilities for solving a situation. God will give us peace, forgiveness, and love if we do the right thing.

Be kind and gentle to people. Comfort those who are sad and crying. Help bring people together to make peace. Enrich their lives with faith and stand firm in what you believe is right, even when people threaten to hurt you.

Jesus tells us to “rejoice and be glad,” for our reward is great in heaven.

In Beauty Way, all is restored again.
